I met a
potential adopter a while back. She was very shy and introverted but very
earnest in her desire to share her life with a greyhound. We spoke for a
long while about many of the things she might encounter during this thing we
call “greyhound ownership”. We should call it something different since
they end up owning us. She did end up adopting a beautiful male greyhound.
I have
followed this adopter’s progress with her new dog quietly; making sure to
answer any questions that she might have. I have watched her dog settle in
very well and let his personality shine through. He has become a local
celebrity in his neighborhood. All the families, adults and kids, know this
dog’s name. They come running out to say hello and pet him on his daily
walks. He soaks all this attention up as his due!
One of the
interesting consequences of all this greyhound’s adulation is that his very
shy owner has blossomed also! Her neighbors don’t always know her name,
they just know her as “the greyhound’s mom”, but they speak to her and she
in turn now knows her neighbors!
Many children
eagerly wait to pet him and are very concerned if there is a change is
schedule. If he is absent for any amount of time, his "fan club" grows
concerned and seek out his owner to ensure all is well.
When I first
starting speaking to her, she was quiet and reserved on the phone. Over the
last few months she has become very animated and enthusiastic and shares
anecdotes of living with a greyhound. Her family has noticed the change in
her and thought that she possibly had "someone" new in her life? She
corrected them. She does have a new love, but he has four legs and a needle
nose.
Recently,
Teddy needed some minor medical care. It was a challenge for his owner to
find a way to pay for his medical care, not being sure how extensive or
expensive it was going to be.
Many people
have been touched by these two and their mutual admiration and dedication.
NOGAP was notified of the predicament.
A vet visit
was made and he was attended to without the owner having to make the tough
decision about what kind of treatment to follow, due to financial concerns.
NOGAP paid for his vet care. He is well and back to greeting the children
as they wait for their morning school bus and is eagerly awaiting their
return in the afternoon.
NOGAP periodically holds auctions and is
always taking donations
to specifically help other greyhounds in need of medical care. You can donate using the paypal button below.
All monies will be put into our "Teddy Fund"
to help with other dogs in need.
It is NOGAP’s policy to be
nondiscriminatory to greyhounds and their families. If we can help to
improve a greyhound’s life, whether they are still in foster care, newly
adopted or are a long time treasured family member and need some help with
medical expenses, we will do what we can to help.
